Utilizing the natural gifts the rainforest provides us
At our gift shop, we proudly showcase the unique artistry of local artisans and the vibrant heritage of our community. Inspired by the lush rainforest surrounding us, many of our creations incorporate natural materials like the Devil’s Club plant, whose leaves are used to craft healing salves known for their medicinal properties. These plant-based products reflect the environment around us, blending nature’s gifts with the creativity and craftsmanship of the community. A highlight of our collection is the extraordinary handcrafted artwork by Tsimshian Master Carver Kevin Clevenger, whose intricate carvings celebrate the rich traditions of the Tsimshian people.
Cedar trees are a cornerstone of the culture and craftsmanship of the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest, including the Tsimshian. Revered for their strength, durability, and natural beauty, these ancient trees have been used for centuries to carve totem poles, which are powerful symbols of family, community, and heritage. The wood from the cedar tree is prized for its ability to withstand the test of time, making it the perfect material for creating totem poles that can stand for generations. Carved with intricate designs, each totem pole tells a unique story, representing the values, traditions, and ancestry of the people it honors. The process of carving a totem pole is an art form passed down through generations, requiring great skill, patience, and deep respect for the tree and its significance.
Kevin Clevenger, our Tsimshian Master Carver, learned the sacred art of carving from his late uncle, Wayne, who was a revered carver in his own right. Under his uncle’s guidance, Kevin honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of the traditions and stories behind each carving. Wayne instilled in him not only the technical craft of carving but also the importance of respecting the cedar wood and the cultural significance it holds. Through this mentorship, Kevin became a master of his craft, carrying forward his uncle’s legacy and continuing to create totem poles and other works that honor the Tsimshian people’s rich history. Today, each piece Kevin carves carries the teachings and spirit of his uncle, making his work a living tribute to their shared heritage. You can see Kevin or his apprentice, Wesley carving in real time on our Rainforest Wildlife Sanctuary & Totem Park Walking Tour. Kevin’s work, which spans a range of products throughout our store, is a true reflection of Alaskan artistry, culture, and family bond and each piece is thoughtfully crafted right here in Ketchikan.
