Alaska’s First Zipline: A Must-Do Adventure in the Last Frontier

Located in Ketchikan, Alaska:

Twenty years ago, Kawanti Adventures (formerly the Alaska Rainforest Canopy & Zipline Expedition) launched Alaska’s very first zipline, pioneering the state’s ultimate canopy adventure.

Construction on the Alaska Rainforest Canopy Zipline began in October 2005, right in the heart of Ketchikan’s Tongass National Rainforest. By April 2006, construction was complete, offering a new way to experience Alaska’s wilderness – flying through the canopy above towering spruce and hemlock trees, taking in sights and sounds of the rainforest like never before.

Alaska is full of unforgettable experiences – glaciers, wildlife, and vast wilderness, but this zipline added something completely different, a chance to see the beauty of the rainforest from within with a birds eye view. It quickly became a must-do for travelers looking for a memorable Southeast Alaska adventure.

A Legacy of Adventure – Experience Alaska’s Rainforest Zipline

The Rainforest Canopy & Zipline Adventure isn’t just another stop on your itinerary — it’s one of those classic Southeast Alaska experiences you’ll be talking about long after the trip is over. The adventure starts with a scenic ride up into the rainforest canopy, where our guides get you geared up and walk you through everything you need to know before heading out on the course.

We know being high above the forest floor can feel a little intimidating at first, and that’s totally normal. Our guides are calm, patient, and incredibly encouraging, making sure everyone feels comfortable and confident before taking that first step off the platform.

Across nine zip-lines, you’ll glide above salmon streams, an estuary, and Herring Cove, having the possibility to spot bald eagles, black bears, and other wildlife along the way. This is a perspective of Alaska you can’t get anywhere else, and it’s one of the reasons the course has earned recognition in the tourism industry.

The final zip-line launches you over the estuary toward a viewing tower above Whitman Lake Fish Hatchery. Suspended 55 feet off the ground, it’s a perfect way to end the experience that’s both thrilling and scenic.

Many visitors call our zipline the highlight of their Alaska trip, a memory that sticks with them long after the adventure is over.
